Bio
Jon Ekstrand (he/him) is a Stockholm-based Swedish film composer and artist. He began his career under the mentorship of acclaimed sound designer Owe Svensson, where he honed his understanding of sound's power and its dramaturgical importance in helping stories reach their full potential. In 1998, while attending Stockholm Film School, Ekstrand met director Daniel Espinosa, forming a close creative partnership that continues to thrive to this day.
Ekstrand and Espinosa have collaborated on seven feature films, including the acclaimed “Easy Money” trilogy, Marvel's “Morbius”, and Hollywood studio productions Child 44 and Life. Their work also extends to recent projects like the arthouse drama “Madame Luna” and Netflix’s TV series “Helicopter Heist”. Beyond these collaborations, Ekstrand’s notable works include Amazon Studios’ drama-thriller “All The Old Knives”, Milad Alami’s psychological drama “The Opponent”, and the Sundance Film Festival prize-winning “Queen of Hearts”, directed by May el-Toukhy.
Ekstrand has enjoyed a rich and dynamic career in film, working across the entire spectrum of the sound team—from boom operator and sound recordist to sound designer—before establishing himself as an acclaimed composer. A self-confessed synthesizer addict, Ekstrand often begins crafting his scores with electro-acoustic elements at their core. His work spans a wide range of genres, from minimalist arthouse ambient to sweeping thriller dramas, recording with full orchestras at renowned studios such as Air Studios in London, as well as Columbia Studios and Sony Studios in Los Angeles. To date, Ekstrand has scored over 40 films and TV series, earning notable accolades, including the Danish Film Institute's Robert Award for his score to the 2019 film Queen of Hearts and the Cannes Series Award for the 2020 TV series Top Dog.
Ekstrand is actively engaged in the current diversity dilemma within the film industry and is part of a composer’s mentorship program arranged through the Swedish collecting society STIM.
