Hulu’s ‘The Other Black Girl’ Premieres, Scored by EmmoLei Sankofa

The Hulu original series The Other Black Girl, scored by EmmoLei Sankofa (she/her) and produced by the Onyx Collective, premieres today. Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Zakiya Dalila Harris, the show stars Sinclair Daniel, Ashleigh Murray, Hunter Parrish, Brittany Adebumola, Bellamy Young, Eric McCormack, and Garcelle Beauvais and follows an African American editorial assistant at a predominantly white publishing firm who gets excited when a new Black co-worker gets hired, but she soon discovers something sinister is going on at the company. Co-showrunners Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey are executive producing the Onyx Collective production with Rashida Jones, Adam Fishbach (Love, Victor, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies), Harris, Tara Duncan (Narcos, Sense8), as well as Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen & Wyck Godfrey (Smile, The Maze Runner).

Equal parts mystery, drama, and comedy, EmmoLei expertly weaves eerie synth pads, vibraphone, and marimba into a light yet haunting score, in addition to blending her signature percussive elements and featuring vocal motifs recorded by choral artists Tonality and her own vocal textures for a distinct sound that is entirely hers. The tense and unsettling nature of the music is delivered in a fresh and smart way that stems from its novel sound palette, something that will leave viewers wanting to hear more.

Infusing…moments of levity with dramatic and horror elements, “The Other Black Girl” walks the same thought-provoking line between terror and comedy that makes Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” so brilliant…. Since the series is told from Black women’s perspectives over a sumptuous soundtrack…, it offers something entirely unique to the genre.

Hulu’s The Other Black Girl, set largely in the lily-white territory of book publishing, taps into [the] tension [of powerlessness within a broader broken system] with every genre in its toolbox — it’s a workplace drama and a scathing satire and a twisty horror story, all braided together into one wildly entertaining package.
