Hulu Announces ‘Cypher’ Premiere

Hulu has just announced the premiere date of Cypher, with music consulting and clearances by Jackie Westfall (she/her)! This pseudo-documentary, directed by Chris Moukarbel and produced by Andscape (Disney/ESPN), chronicles rapper Tierra Whack's meteoric rise to fame while slowly peeling away the veil that hides the dark underbelly of the public eye. Questions begin to arise "who is filming whom" according to the official description, and whether or not her fame comes at a price.

Whack became a YouTube viral sensation at the age of 15 after recording her rapping in Philadelphia, gaining recognition and praise from stars like Erykah Badu and Billie Eilish. Going behind the scenes of concerts and music videos, the film documents her career years after her start and catches a particular fan interaction that seemed harmless at first. This however steadily begins to haunt Whack and her team, even following them all the way to Dubai in a swirl of unsettling events. What begins to unfold is the uncertainty of who is watching, and whether certain pop culture conspiracy theories carry some truths and real consequences.

Cypher recently just won the 2023 Tribeca Festival’s Founders Award for Best U.S. Narrative Feature and will be in theaters and stream on Hulu November 24.
