2024 DOC NYC Official Selections Scored by Emmolei Sankofa, Mary Lattimore

DOC NYC is America’s largest documentary festival, boasting a reputation for screening documentary features that go on to win the Academy Award for the past decade, as well as 24 of the last 25 Oscar-nominated documentary features.

This year the festival featured official selections with original music by two Spectra clients:

A Photographic Memory, featuring original music by Mary Lattimore and directed by Rachel Elizabeth Seed, screened in the Metropolis Competition program. The feature documentary has previously screened at a number of festivals around the world and is officially eligible for Academy Award consideration. “Sheila Turner Seed was an award-winning New York City-based, journalist in the 1970s who interviewed such photography luminaries as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Gordon Parks, Cecil Beaton, and Lisette Model. When she passed away suddenly and tragically, she left behind an infant daughter, Rachel. More than 30 years later, Rachel has herself become a filmmaker, photographer, and writer. A Photographic Memory marks a moving attempt to navigate grief and nostalgia as Rachel deep-dives into Shelia’s archives, much of which had been forgotten.” – Jaie Laplante

This was the documentary short’s world premiere ahead of it’s broadcast on American Masters on PBS. “House of Aama’s approach to fashion is anchored in personal archives, Black folklore, and storytelling.”
